Get a grip! It's only a bit of caramelised pork with green papaya salad!

Whilst I was paying my most recent speeding ticket, it occurred to me that the many I have acquired over the past few years have been whilst speeding on route from home to George St in the rocks, to make it to my favourite restaurant, Sailors Thai, by the time their kitchen closed.

I clearly needed to get a grip, but when I tried telling my stomach that, I found myself dreaming of the Chiang Mai chicken with those silky noodles and crisp piquant pickles or the deep fried rainbow trout with rich, red and fragrant curry sauce. Before I knew it, I was rummaging through my handbag to find my keys and I was off in a sweat, speeding down the street in the direction of you guessed it, culinary heaven.

Then it got me thinking of all the wonderful meals I would probably, if destitute and down to my last dollar, find myself in Kings Cross hocking my Braun food processor for. Holy hamburger! Had I become a gastronomic junky… how low would I stoop?

The Simmone Logue dinner favourites I could not live without.

  • Day 1: Sailors Thai - Green Papaya salad with crispy pork and coconut rice

  • Day 2: Bar Reggio- Garlic prawn and chilli pizza, Rocket and parmesan Salad

  • Day 3: Fratelli Paradiso- Fried calamari, Lasagne

  • Day 4: Simmone Logue’s- Chicken and leek pie, Lemon curd cheese cake

  • Day 5: Macleay St Bistro- Fillet steak béarnaise with pommes frittes

  • Day 6: Thai Niesa- Betel leaf with prawn and flying fish roe, Duck curry with lychees, Soft shell crab with green mango salad

  • Day 7: Simmone Logue Chicken burritos with chilli jam and fresh lime, Caramel kiss

And it seems my friends and colleagues have their favourites too! I realised I am not the only foodie freak around here. This is what these desperadoes had to say……

Harry M Miller: "The corn beef hash browns at the Plaza Hotel in New York"

Andy Logue: "Can't live without the Salt and pepper flounder at the Supper Inn and sourdough toast with house made jam at Dench Bakery."

Joanna Logue: "My favourite is the "I love salmon" on the specials menu at Bar Rashi."

Brooke Crowle: "Sean's panorama for the fried harbor prawns with aioli, and the ribs with barbecue sauce at the Oaks Hotel in Balmain."

Molly Crowle: "The caramelized onion tart at Orange Grove growers market

Collin Hudson:"My chump chops with tomato sauce."

Karen Laveky: "My mum’s matzo ball soup."

Courtney Reece: "Green's café for their baked egg with parmesan."

Looking at the list I realised what a stickler I am and decided to test myself. You know, go out on a limb, spread my wings a little and see what else there was to see. Or more to the point taste what else there was to taste! I decided I would go for two weeks and try the restaurants I would normally walk past or try new things on the menus of my favourite places. It would be a little culinary experiment. And I will keep you posted! You never know, I might get myself a whole new list of favourites.

YOUR SAY: Have you got a favourite dish you simply just can't do without?
